TSTY Transformer Applies in Uganda hydropower project

December 31, 2025

Project Overview

Project Location: Hydropower Station in Western Uganda.

Project Background: To accurately respond to Uganda's growing domestic electricity demand and optimize the utilization of existing hydropower resources, the Ugandan government plans to implement a series of small- to medium-sized, high-efficiency "potential-tapping and efficiency-enhancing" hydropower station expansion projects. This project aims to utilize the intake, pressure pipelines, and tailrace systems of existing power stations, and through the construction of a new compact power plant, add clean power generation capacity, rapidly improving the reliability of the power grid with lower investment costs and environmental impact.

Core Equipment and Technical Specifications

The main transformer system design for this project adheres to the principles of "safety, reliability, economy, and ease of maintenance," perfectly matching the actual conditions of a medium-sized hydropower station and the local power grid.

Main Transformer:

Model and Capacity: 2 x 60MVA/220kV oil-immersed power transformers.

Key Parameters:

 Rated Capacity: 60MVA.

Voltage Combination: 10.5kV / 220kV, YNd11 connection group.

Cooling Method: ONAN (oil-immersed self-cooling). This design features a simple structure, with no external fans, oil pumps, or other rotating parts, ensuring extremely reliable operation and low maintenance requirements. It is highly suitable for Uganda's local maintenance technology conditions and hot climate (eliminating concerns about auxiliary cooling system failures).

Special Requirements: Fully compliant with IEC 60076 standards, with enhancements for the Ugandan environment.

This project is a key energy infrastructure project for Uganda to enhance its self-sustaining energy development capabilities. The successful commissioning of the two 220kV main transformers not only increased the total installed capacity of the hydropower station by 30%, but also significantly strengthened the structural strength of the western Uganda power grid, providing a stable power source for regional industrial development.
